Isolating Iran is part of the ‘great energy game: Antony Loewenstein

The Middle East is witness to continuous developments these days, such as Iran's active diplomacy to attract the indispensable 118-member bloc of non-aligned countries to support its nuclear program, the growing isolation of Israel in European countries and within academic circles in the U.S., Arabs' fears of losing the power game in the Persian Gulf region, and the expansion of illegal settlements of Israel in the West Bank and its unremitting disobedience to United Nations Security Council resolutions. Such developments have turned the Middle East into the center of international attention. Iran, as the Persian Gulf region's only non-Arab nation, Israel, as the world's sole Jewish state, and a host of fragile Arab countries, who are being immersed in the waves of the West's economic turmoil, find their destiny intertwined, with each party trying to surmount the other.

Turkey's Ascendancy, the Russification of Israel and the Future of the Middle-East

Since the beginning of this century, Turkey has shown impressive results both on the economic and political fronts, growing three times faster than the EU average in the past ten years, while demonstrating that Islamic culture is fully compatible with democracy, constitutional government and the rule of law. But, the Turkish Miracle was met with a combination of disdain and skepticism in Brussels, Berlin and Paris - where conservative commentators and politicians regularly warn their readers of the growing "Turkish threat" (1)- a rather peculiar way of thanking Ankara for having stood by Western Europe throughout the Cold War! Having been repeatedly rebuffed by the European Union, Turkey, by far the most advanced Eurasian nation, has progressively rediscovered its Asian and Middle-Eastern hinterland, rebuilding age-old ties with Damascus, Delhi, Baku, Beijing and Teheran. The economic dynamism and cultural openness of Turkey today stand in stark contrast with the ossification of Israeli society: having to deal with the consequences of its continuing military occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, Israel is increasingly shifting away from the Western ways of its founding fathers (e.g. David Ben-Gurion, the first Prime Minister of Israel, was trained as a corporate lawyer in Warsaw and Istanbul) toward an obsessive focus on colonial control- crudely stereo-typifying the autonomous Muslim populace it seeks to subjugate, and thus reproducing the xenophobic worldview its right-wing leaders inherited from Czarist Russia.

The Israel-Turkey Rift: Is The Future of NATO At Risk?

If anyone still harbored any doubts that there is an urgent need to resolve the Middle East crisis one needs only look at the events that unfolded two weeks ago off the coast of Gaza when Israeli commandos stormed a Turkish relief vessel heading for the besieged Palestinian territory. The end result of that operation, one which turned out to be a monumental public relations fiasco for Israel, was that it raised the level of animosity between Israel and Turkey, a level which was already dipping well into the red zone – pushing it another notch deeper into the danger zone. One must not forget that Turkey is a full-fledged member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and that further schism between the Jewish state and a NATO country could have serious implications on the Alliance. The North Atlantic treaty stipulates very clearly that an attack against one member of the Alliance is equal to an attack on all members. It is this unshakable tenet that has kept Western Europe – and Turkey – safe during the Cold War, acting as a strong deterrence and a reminder to the Warsaw Pact countries that any act of aggression against any member state would be regarded as an act of aggression against the entire Alliance.

Uri Avnery’s assessment of the recent Israeli-Turkish diplomatic and political row - that “the relationship between Turkey and Israel will probably return to normal, if not to its former degree of warmth” – seems sensible and daring. In my view, however, it is also inaccurate. Simply put, there is just no going back. In a recent article entitled “Israel Must Get Used to the New Turkey,” Suat KiniklioÄŸlu, Deputy Chairman of External Affairs for Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) wrote, “Israel appears to be yearning for the golden 1990s, which were the product of a very specific situation in the region. Those days are over and are unlikely to come back even if the Justice and Development Party (AKP) ends up no longer being in government.

Dec. 14, 2009 Ever since the fall of Baghdad, the volatility of virtually the entire Middle East has been ‘off the charts’. Principally, this development had to do with the ridiculous, grand-sounding imperial project of heralding in a watershed of democracy through the use of shocking and awful means. As soon as the greatest military force in history stepped foot on Arabia – adamant to grab the will of Providence by the collar – flashpoints began to spark up left, right and centre.

Dec. 12, 2009 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful Al Qaeda leads the world Power America to its fate, and drags it to a new grave that leaves no parasite except that it swallows it, it is Yemen, the land that stood defiant before all occupation and turned their plans to memories. It is not expected of the American people to understand the conspiracies of the Big companies which run their country and whose finance depends on lighting the fire of war and conflicts, because it is so drunken away from what its leaders are doing of dragging them a hopeless drag towards flames and the end would be the fate of the former Soviet Union. The state of the Soviet Union is apparent before everyone, disintegration, separation and collapse in different fields, while earlier, it was, as you know, in a station of power and control. But then it left what was in its hands and was lured by what was above the tree, it did not protect what was in its hand, and couldn't even get what was above the tree.

August 10, 2009 March 23, 2008 What Christians Don't Know About Israel by Grace Halsell (March 23, 2008) Dear Radical Reader, Easter Sunday greetings. I realize that many readers are not Christians but this should not diminish the intent nor the interest of those concerned about what the state of Israel is doing to the Palestinian people within the Middle East nor the apparatus that the Zionists use here in Canada and the USA to brainwash both Christian and non-Christian people into believing their deceptive propaganda that Israel is a free and democratic nation that honours all its citizens and respects the lives of others. Grace Halsell¹s experiences in this area are most instructive especially for anyone not versed in the protocols of deception which govern Zionism both here and abroad.
July 9, 2009 Every inquiry must start somewhere. We have chosen this inquiry to start in the late eighties when two junior intelligence officers one Pakistani other Indian faced each other on opposite sides of the law. The Pakistani intelligence officer had caught the Indian agent on Pakistani soil with incriminating evidence. Indian agent knew his life had come to an end. However, everything has a price.

Warns it may move to capture strategic Golan Heights June 28, 2009 A view of the Golan Heights JERUSALEM – A Syrian militant group threatened over the weekend to seize the strategic Golan Heights by force if a peace agreement involving the strategic plateau is not reached with Israel. Israel's Army Radio reported a group calling itself the Syrian Committee for the Liberation of the Golan on Saturday said it would move to capture the Golan, adding Israel has not shown willingness to achieve peace or to return what they called "Syrian land." WND first broke the story in September 2006 of the formation of the Committee for the Liberation of the Golan, quoting Syrian officials stating the group was formed to launch "resistance" against Israeli troop positions and Jewish communities in the Golan Heights. WND also conducted an in-person interview with a top leader of the Committee. One month later, a man identified as the leader of the Committee gave an interview to state-run Iranian television.

June 8, 2009 If there was one passage in the speech that President Barack Obama gave in Cairo on June 4, that alarmed Israelis aligned with the Netanyahu government, and destablized Rush Limbaugh, Liz Cheney and a host of American neocons, it was neither his insistence on halting Israeli settlements, nor his declared readiness to negotiate with Iran without preconditions, nor his acknowledgement of Hamas as a political force, but a statement that broke a fundamental taboo regarding official Israeli historiography. After reviewing the persecution of Jews throughout history, culminating in the holocaust, Obama went on to state: “On the other hand, it is also undeniable that the Palestinian people – Muslims and Christians – have suffered in pursuit of a homeland. For more than 60 years, they’ve endured the pain of dislocation. Many wait in refugee camps …. They endure the daily humiliations – large and small – that come with occupation.

May 14, 2009 Following a war between Israel and the countries of Syria, Jordan and Egypt in 1967, Israel established a military occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem. That same year, United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 242 calling upon the State of Israel to withdraw. To date, Israel has yet to comply. Millions of Palestinian Arabs live under a brutal, oppressive military occupation while the everyday lives of both Palestinians and Israelis are plagued with violence and insecurity. Palestinian people react to the oppression within the limited means of resistance at their disposal bringing upon themselves the full weight of Israel's military arsenal.

April 2, 2009 Proclamations (and delusions) of sovereignty in the Arab world create and necessitate resistance. As a political concept, sovereignty means the independence and power to exercise control over a political and territorial entity free from external interference. But in this age of selective and externally-defined “democracy,” of “fighting terrorism,” of “international consensus,” and of “globalization” and its concomitant neo-liberal privatizing “reforms,” how can any Arab state or an aspiring-to-be-a-state like Palestine be sovereign? The reality or non-reality, as the case may be, of sovereignty in the Arab world is especially frustrating. Sovereignty in Arabic is generally described as sulta or siyada. But descriptively, it also extends to kingship (mulk), hegemony (haymana), control (saytara), and rule (hukm / tahakkum).

Jan. 13, 2009 Much has been made of Hamas' reported failure to honour last year's truce. But, an extraordinary correspondence between Jewish residents of the much-rocketed town of Sderot, nearby kibbutz, and the Palestinians living within sight in the Gaza strip paints a very different picture of that truce from that repeatedly given by the Israeli government. Barrack Obama was taken to Sderot last year to show him the effects of rocketing. He remarked on how Israeli towns looked like American from the air and offered his full support to the town’s citizens, promising to invite its representatives to the White House soon after taking office.

Tuesday 13 January 2009 Whether on Gaza or any other issue, everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. But, as the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan taught, none of us is entitled to our own facts, a lesson that all sides in the Gaza conflict need to learn. Tel Aviv and its defenders never tire of repeating that Hamas started the war by shooting rockets into Israel. Few of the pro-Zionists mention that Israel has long blockaded Gaza's ports and stopped cross-border shipment of needed supplies, creating a humanitarian crisis well before the current fighting began.

But its merciless assault on Gaza has led him to devastating conclusions A wounded Palestinian policeman gestures while lying on the ground outside Hamas police headquarters following an Israeli air strike in Gaza City. Photograph: Mohammed Abed/AFP/Getty Images The only way to make sense of Israel's senseless war in Gaza is through understanding the historical context. Establishing the state of Israel in May 1948 involved a monumental injustice to the Palestinians.

A glorious past inspires a conflicted nation. What's so striking about the ruins of Persepolis in southern Iran, an ancient capital of the Persian Empire that was burned down after being conquered by Alexander the Great, is the absence of violent imagery on what's left of its stone walls. Among the carvings there are soldiers, but they're not fighting; there are weapons, but they're not drawn. Mainly you see emblems suggesting that something humane went on here instead—people of different nations gathering peacefully, bearing gifts, draping their hands amiably on one another's shoulders. In an era noted for its barbarity, Persepolis, it seems, was a relatively cosmopolitan place—and for many Iranians today its ruins are a breathtaking reminder of who their Persian ancestors were and what they did.

Written Summer 1995 (3.2) May 1995 marks the 50th year commemoration of the Allied Victory of World War II. Despite the major commemoration events that will be taking place throughout the world, very little is actually known in the West about the incredible contribution that the small Soviet Republic of Azerbaijan played in helping defeat the Nazis. Without their sacrificial commitment and effort, particularly in the production of oil and oil products, the war might well have had a very different outcome. The War's Toll World War II broke out rather unexpectantly in the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941.

SEARCH for other articles by Farid Alakbarov published in Azerbaijan International, whose specialy is researching Azerbaijani manuscripts written in the Arabic script. Azerbaijan has long been known for its rich oil resources. The earliest exploration of onshore oil fields goes back at least to the 7th century BC, during the age of the Median kingdom in what is now Southern Azerbaijan [Iran]. The Median province that bordered Assyria became the first place in the world to extract oil from wells. Beginning in the 5th century BC, oil was lifted from wells in leather buckets.

The transformation of the geopolitical situation at the end of this century has expanded the role of regions with large fuel and energy reserves. The Caspian basin in unique in this regard - it has attracted the attention of governments and leading industrial/financial group worldwide, as it did at the beginning of the century. The dynamics by which events in the Caspian are unfolding are governed not only by increased investor interest, but also by the very nature of the modern technologies being used. Today Turkmenistan is the focus of worldwide attention. It is examining this process and taking an active position based on full consideration of its national interests and the most reasonable approach to the interests of all littoral states.

January 14, 2008 There has been wide coverage of the tragic state of the remnants of ancient civilizations that once flourished on the plains between Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Most of these point the finger at U.S. occupiers and their actions which have not only devastated a modern state but also ravaged its wonderful ancient cultures. A case in point is the ancient city of Babylon where the occupiers have opted to have one of their largest military bases.

Tuesday 15 January 2008 Two debates have raged in Pakistan and among Pakistanis everywhere since Benazir Bhutto's tragic end on December 27, 2007. One of these is about who killed the former prime Minister and leader of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP). The other is about who, regardless of such formal designations and descriptions, she really was. And the second debate, far more important from the point of view of the pro-democracy movement, is leading, not so strangely, to a large agreement on what Bhutto represents in her death, though differences persist on what she was in her life. The debate on her death is largely one between the Pervez Musharraf regime and the rest of Pakistan.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Pakistani leader Gen. Pervez Musharraf declared a state of emergency Saturday, suspending the constitution and replacing the country's chief justice ahead of a ruling on his right to serve as president. In an address to nation on state-run television, Musharraf cited the threat of Islamist terrorism for the move and said he had acted with Pakistan's interest at heart. He blamed "extremists" traveling across the country, who he said are not afraid of the country's security forces. Troops were deployed at state-run Pakistan Television -- one of the few stations left running -- and at radio stations, and most phone lines in the capital Islamabad were reportedly down.

Researchers are weighing the accuracy of the reigns of King Solomon and King David against archeological and scientific data just recently discovered. These scholars are coming up with some very interesting conclusions. Many Christian religious scholars, such as noted author Thomas L. Thompson, think the history of Palestine and its peoples is very different from Old Testament narratives, regardless of political claims. A history of the region during the Iron I and Iron II periods leaves little room for any historicity in the accounts of the books of Samuel and Kings, critics say.

Editorial ReviewsFrom Publishers WeeklyThe title of this look at the oil economy is misleading, as only a small portion of the book addresses journalist Hiro's belief in an imminent scramble for oil resembling 19th-century European colonialist power struggles. What he describes is not so much conflict over the control of resources as an economic battle spurred by the entry of nations like China and India into the oil production economy. He also spends a lot of time recapping the early 20th-century history of oil production, with a lengthy digression into alternative energy sources. Hiro (Secrets and Lies) brings an undisguised left-wing slant to his reportage, declaring unequivocally that the Bush administration chose to invade Iraq to get at its oil reserves, while praising Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez for using oil money to launch progressive opposition to American interests. He also criticizes the media for not doing enough to call attention to global warming and hammers repeatedly on the obvious point that energy companies have a vested interest in keeping consumers "hooked on oil and gas.

Tony Blair is no more. The now-former British prime minister, a neo-con soulmate, was destroyed by the war on Iraq. Before tendering his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II, maybe with echoes of Oasis' "Don't Look Back in Anger" ringing in is mind, Blair at least had the decency to apologize publicly for the times he has "fallen short". No words to that effect will ever emanate from George W Bush's White House. Young Americans - 17-29 years old - want the end of the war on Iraq, according to a New York Times/CBS News/MTV poll.

Said to be aimed at Cheney himself, the attack left him untouched while killing twenty-one Afghan workers and two Americans - still more casualties in Afghanistan's thirty-year, million-and-a-half-dead civil war. In that setting, one hopes Cheney heard symbolically more than a "boom." Bagram thunders with relevant ghosts, many of them American. In the fourth century B.

Depth-finders, sonar used to locate submerged artifactsPARIS — The great port of Alexandria was a bustling trade hub, a transit point for merchandise from throughout the ancient world, at least until much of it vanished into the Mediterranean Sea.Treasure hunters have long scoured the Egyptian coast for vestiges of the port, thought to have disappeared about 13 centuries ago. Now, an exhibit at Paris’ Grand Palais brings together 500 ancient artifacts recovered from the area by underwater archaeologists using sophisticated nuclear technology.Egypt’s Sunken Treasures features colossuses of pink granite, a 17-tonne slab inscribed with hieroglyphics, a phalanx of crouching sphinx, pottery, amulets and gold coins and jewellery — all painstakingly fished out of the Mediterranean. Some of the oldest artifacts are estimated to have spent 2,000 years underwater.

They asked a young Armenian boy, Haji Yearman, and his father to guide them up the mountain and show them the ark of Noah. Haji Yearman and his father did just that! The Atheists and the Ark!This upset the scientists, because their object was to prove that the ark was not there. These scientists were atheists, and they tried to burn the ark. They said it would not burn, so they tried to destroy it, but they could not.
